What Is Diode Laser Dentistry?
A diode laser uses a focused beam of light to cut, shape or treat soft tissue. In dentistry it can be used for procedures involving the gums and other soft tissues, and in selected endodontic (root canal) applications. The laser can offer precise, controlled treatment and may help reduce bleeding and discomfort for some patients.
Procedures the Laser May Be Used For
At Advance Dental Care the diode laser is used for selected procedures including frenectomies (releasing tight tissue attachments), gingivectomies (reshaping gum tissue), gingival pigmentation removal, and certain steps during root canal treatment. Not every patient or procedure is suitable for the laser — suitability is assessed individually.
Gingival Pigmentation Removal
Some people have darker pigmentation on their gums that they would like to lighten. The diode laser can be used to remove or reduce this pigmentation in suitable cases. Results vary between individuals and the treatment is not always permanent, as pigmentation can return over time. Your dentist will discuss what is realistic for you.
What to Expect
Laser soft-tissue procedures are often carried out under local anaesthetic. The laser allows precise treatment of the target tissue. Healing is usually straightforward, and your dentist will give you aftercare instructions. As with any treatment, individual results vary and suitability is based on a consultation.
